Embark on a thrilling full day adventure to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. You will hike across the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on Africa’s tallest mountain. Rising to 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the world’s tallest free standing peak. It is a true natural wonder and one of the famous Seven Summits.

Your Shira Plateau journey begins with a scenic drive through the outskirts of Moshi. The route continues into the lush West Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve. Along the way, you may spot Colobus monkeys and a variety of bird species among the trees. As you ascend to around 3,500 meters (11,480 feet), you will arrive at Shira Gate, the starting point of your hike.

From here, you set out on foot across the Shira Plateau. This vast volcanic landscape offers breathtaking views and a strong sense of wilderness. Accompanied by a professional mountain guide or park ranger, you will explore diverse trails. You will also enjoy the unique sights, sounds, and colors of Tanzania’s high altitude ecosystem.

On clear days, you can admire magnificent views of Kibo Peak and Kilimanjaro’s northern glaciers. The scenery also includes the sweeping plains of Amboseli National Park in Kenya and the dramatic Simba River Gorge below. Several stops are made at scenic viewpoints along the northern rim of the Shira Crater. These stops are ideal for photography and quiet appreciation of the volcanic terrain.

After approximately four hours of hiking, depending on your pace, you return to your vehicle. You then enjoy a scenic drive back to Arusha. The day ends with fresh mountain air and unforgettable memories from one of Tanzania’s most beautiful landscapes.
