Tarangire National Park.

Tarangire National Park Overview

Located just a few hours’ drive from Arusha, Tarangire National Park is a captivating destination on Tanzania’s northern safari circuit. Stretching into two game-controlled areas, it allows wildlife to roam freely across vast landscapes. Before the rains, herds of wildebeests, gazelles, zebras, and giraffes migrate to Tarangire’s open plains in search of the last green pastures. The park is renowned for its exceptional game viewing, particularly during the dry season when large elephant herds gather beneath ancient baobab trees. With sweeping views of the Maasai Steppe and southern mountains, Tarangire offers a truly memorable safari experience.

Wildlife and Birdlife in Tarangire

Tarangire is home to one of Tanzania’s highest concentrations of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem. Massive elephant herds dig dry riverbeds for water, while predators lurk among the abundance of grazers, including zebra, buffalo, impala, and eland. The park is also famous for its unique dry-country antelopes, such as the fringe-eared oryx and long-necked gerenuk. Bird enthusiasts will delight in over 550 recorded species — from the giant Kori bustard and ostrich to the colourful yellow-collared lovebird and endemic ashy starling. With tree-climbing lions, lounging leopards, playful mongooses, and stunning landscapes, Tarangire is an unmissable stop on any Tanzanian safari.
